The exhibition is devoted to the work of Jacek Damięcki — it is a monolithic retrospective of one of the most fascinating architects of Warsaw, a modernist who has worked consistently and uncompromisingly throughout his career to formulate his own concept of space.
The exhibition at Zachęta included archival material, as well as designed reinterpretations of his work, among them his 1961 Academy of Fine Arts diploma installation, the system of folding canvas screens originally designed in 1974, and the accompanying photo frieze clamps designed in the same year.
We, as Centrala, had the privilege of collaborating with Jacek Damięcki, from whom we gained a lot of oral knowledge, which was, hitherto undocumented elsewhere. This knowledge proved invaluable to the development of the exhibition, not only because he shared with us the ideology of his work, but also considering that between 1965–1981, Damięcki was employed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw; there he taught exhibition design at the Interior Design Faculty, as the Chair of Exhibition Design. Damięcki created over thirty exhibitions, including those for Polish products at national and international fairs.
The exhibition of Jacek Damięcki’s work is part of a succession of solo shows dedicated to showcasing the work of architects at Zachęta. It was preceded by exhibitions devoted to the work of Oskar Hansen (2005) and Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz (2014).
