Project of social renovation of public space in Warsaw, in the area build during the socialism era. The proces was launched by "Na Miejscu / On Site" Foundation for Local Communities in 2013 with creation of a common vision hammered out during open workshops supervised by experts from Project for Public Spaces. As a result of this efforts, the specific data and experience were collected, which served as initial resource for the project. CENTRALA joined the process in February 2014. The strategy and the design was delivered throughout summer 2014.
Realisation of the first element: September 2015
The Project was awarded by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Forbes in the "Sustainable Development Leaders" contest and the United Nations Development Program for "The best social partnership".
The project is meant not only as physical renovation of the common space between estate’s residential buildings. It also provides a social engagement agenda. Starting with the design work from February 2014 the team incorporated the participation process. During the consultation residents had the opportunity to indicate "islands" preferred for the prospective use of the square. The project proposes a number of new features, partially temporary ones as experiment in the public space. The inhabitants were taking part in decision making about directions, functional solutions and the final shape of the project.
"THE ARCHIPELAGO STRATEGY"
The structure allows the project to develop over time, instead of being completed as a single investment. It is, therefore, possible to fund the project from different sources
Proposals: municipal budget, reserves; an auction for the partners; participation budget; a "small grant"; carrying out the construction together with the residents, as a local initiative; being designed by young studios, in the form of residence
