„City and Garden” is an urban farming space placed in the very heart of Warsaw. Apart from agricultural production it provides workshops on environmental issues, horticulture and gastronomy. BMW, the sponsor of the project, invited two social partners, Artanimacje Association and Association of Creative Iniciatives „ę”, who invited naext „city players” to participate. 90 so called „big bags” were distributed among participating NGO's, institutions, firms, families and individual people. The iniciative incribes itself in a global tendency of corporate social responsability projects taking place in the realm usually dominated by NGO's. What makes it unique in Polish condition is the involvement of entities from all sectors. In a created public garden by Żelazna 51/53 street (in Norblin Factory site, where so called „bio bazar” is located) one can plant and harvest since may till october. Participants can learn how to feed, protect and maintain biodiversity of plants, while attracting pollinating species of insects. All this with a help from a professional gardener and with use of locally available tools, seeds and plants.
An important role in the project is being played by educational workshops and events held by enthousiasts, who explain the rules of contemporary ecologic gardening, traditional agriculture, how to live in a sustainable way in a big city and show how to become an urban horticultor. The garden is an open space for everybody's ideas, knowledge and anything that can enrich it's program.
The architectural challenge was about accomodating planned functions in the available space of an post-industrial street with an empty lot in it's ending. The two types of space clearly influence the disposition of functions, between leisure cum eductaion zone ( so-called „green street” ) and the very garden. Chosen materials had to respond to the expectation of high recyclability and efficient bio-degradation, that is why the main components used are: machine binder cannabis rope, MFP construction plywood and „big bags” and roofings made with a polypropylene blend with short decomposition period.
