CENTRALA’s research into pre- and post-war housing schemes has revealed that it is the abstract, sculptural form of the elements creating social space that allows for changing their usage over time. We have observed, for instance, that in many estates inhabited by aging residents the sandboxes, which previously had formed a part of children’s playgrounds, have been turned into flower beds tended by senior citizens. If we declare openness for changes as a permanent attribute of the space, we can stop defining its functions and, instead, start to program it according to current needs. This is the philosophy that underlies Playscape (Polish, Grajobraz)—a multi-functional, outdoor space for local activities.
